There’s a lot of “free stuff” online that turns out to be a survey farm, a subscription trap or a scam. This list is the opposite: freebies in Canada that are real, cost nothing, and don’t ask for your credit card.

We’ve grouped them by type, from free food on your birthday to free museum and national park admission, and added the rules that trip people up.

Birthday freebies

This is the biggest category by far. Restaurants, coffee chains, beauty stores and retailers give away free food, drinks and gifts to loyalty members on their birthday. The catch is that most require you to join the program days or weeks before your birthday.

We keep a full, regularly updated list: 85+ Best Birthday Freebies in Canada. Sign up for the ones you’ll actually use about a month ahead.

Free product samples

Sampler

Sampler is a Toronto-founded sampling service that matches Canadians with free product samples from brands. You create a profile and answer a few questions about your household and interests, and Sampler sends samples that fit. Brands may ask for feedback afterwards. Keeping your profile up to date improves your matches.

Brand websites and newsletters

Many big consumer brands run sample offers and coupon programs directly, especially for baby products, pet food, beauty and personal care. Joining a brand’s email list or loyalty program is often how those offers are announced.

How to spot a fake free sample

  • A real sample program will never ask for your credit card, banking details or SIN.
  • “Just pay shipping to release your free sample” is a classic scam.
  • Be wary of “free trial” offers that roll into a monthly subscription. Read the terms before you enter payment details.

Free admission to national parks and attractions

Parks Canada: free for youth 17 and under

Kids and teens 17 and under get free admission to all national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas run by Parks Canada, with no pass required. Camping, guided tours and other fees still apply, and it doesn’t cover provincial or municipal parks.

New citizens and permanent residents: Canoo

If you’ve become a Canadian citizen or permanent resident in the last year, the free Canoo app from the Institute for Canadian Citizenship gets you a year of free admission to Parks Canada places, for you and up to four children under 18. Hundreds of museums, galleries and attractions across the country also take part. Check in with the app at each venue.

Your library card

Many public libraries lend free passes to local attractions. Toronto Public Library’s MAP (Museum + Arts Pass) is one of the biggest: adult cardholders can reserve free passes to places like the AGO, the ROM, the Toronto Zoo, Ripley’s Aquarium and the Bata Shoe Museum. New passes are released on the first Wednesday of each month and go quickly. Other library systems run similar programs, so ask at your branch.

Free money you might be owed

Items scanned at the wrong price

Under the Scanner Price Accuracy Code, if an item scans higher than the shelf price at a participating store, you get it free if it’s $10 or less ($15 in Quebec). See Price Errors in Canada for how to claim it.

Class action settlements

Many Canadian class action settlements pay out to anyone who bought a product or used a service, sometimes with no receipt needed. Our Class Actions tracker lists the settlements open right now and their deadlines, and our guide explains how to claim a class action settlement.

Free daily Bitcoin

Shakepay’s ShakingSats feature gives small amounts of Bitcoin for shaking your phone each day. Our ShakingSats guide explains how it works and the sign-up bonus.

Free services that usually cost money

  • Tax filing. If you have a modest income and a simple tax situation, the CRA’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) runs free tax clinics across the country. There is also CRA-certified tax software you can use for free.
  • Your credit score. You don’t need to pay to check it. Free services such as Borrowell, and many banking apps, show your score without affecting it.
  • Grocery coupons. Canadian coupon sites like webSaver let you print grocery coupons and load cashback offers for free.

Free stuff from deals

Every so often, a retailer gives something away outright: a free item with an app download, a free sample with any order, or a price that hits $0 after a coupon. We tag these as Free; you can see every live one with the Free filter.

Free offers are the first deals to run out. Deal Alerts will email you when one goes live.

FAQ

How can I get free stuff in Canada without surveys?

Start with birthday programs, Sampler, library attraction passes and Parks Canada’s free youth admission. None involve surveys or payment.

Are free sample sites in Canada legit?

Some are, many aren’t. A legitimate program never asks for a credit card, bank details or your SIN, and never charges shipping to “unlock” a sample.

Do kids get into national parks free?

Yes. Youth 17 and under get free admission to all places run by Parks Canada. Fees for camping and activities still apply.

What can new Canadians get for free?

The Canoo app gives new citizens and permanent residents a year of free admission to Parks Canada places and free or discounted entry to hundreds of attractions across the country.
