PC Optimum is one of the most popular loyalty programs in Canada, and one of the most misunderstood. Plenty of people scan their card for years and redeem a few dollars here and there. Used well, the same points can cover a grocery bill or a big Shoppers Drug Mart haul.
Here’s how PC Optimum works, what your points are worth, and how to get the most out of them.
How PC Optimum works
PC Optimum is the free loyalty program for Loblaw-owned stores and Shoppers Drug Mart. You earn points when you scan your card or app at checkout, and spend them like cash at participating stores.
You can earn and redeem at:
- Loblaw grocery stores, including Loblaws, No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore, Zehrs, Fortinos, Your Independent Grocer, Valu-mart, Provigo, Maxi and more
- Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix
- Esso gas stations (earn and redeem) and Mobil (earn only)
What PC Optimum points are worth
In stores, points are redeemed in blocks of 10,000 points = $10. That makes each point worth a tenth of a cent, so 1,000 points is $1.
| Where you redeem | What you get | Value per 10,000 points |
|---|---|---|
| Grocery stores and Shoppers | $10 off per 10,000 points | $10 |
| Esso gas | 4,000 points = 10¢/L off, up to 40 L | Up to $10 (less if you buy under 40 L) |
| Shoppers bonus redemption events | Bonus value on large redemptions | Often around $13–$15 |
How to earn more points
Load your personalized offers every week
This is where most of the points are. The PC Optimum app and website show personalized offers based on what you usually buy, such as “Buy 2 and get 3,000 points.” Open the app, look through the week’s offers, and load the ones you’ll use. Points are added automatically when you scan your card at checkout.
Watch for bonus events
Shoppers Drug Mart regularly runs points events, such as spend-$X-get-bonus-points days. Combined with a sale and a loaded offer, these are where earning really adds up. Just don’t let bonus points talk you into buying things you don’t need.
Fill up at Esso
PC Optimum members earn points on fuel and convenience store purchases at Esso. Mobil stations also earn points, at rates that vary by location. Payment cards linked to the program can boost the gas earn rate.
Scan every time
It sounds obvious, but missed scans are the most common way points are lost. Add your card to your phone’s wallet or use the app so it’s always with you.
How to redeem points for the most value
Save up for a Shoppers bonus redemption event
Several times a year, Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix run bonus redemption events, where large redemptions are worth more than usual. In a May 2026 event, for example, 50,000 points got you $65 off instead of $50, and the bonuses grew at higher tiers.
The rules usually include:
- You pay the tax on the full purchase; points can’t cover tax.
- Points can’t be used to buy gift cards.
- Only one redemption per transaction.
If you don’t need the points right away, saving them for one of these events is the easiest way to get 30–50% more value.
Or just use them at the grocery store
Redeeming $10 at a time at the grocery store is perfectly good value too: it’s straightforward, and there’s no waiting. The worst thing you can do with points is let them sit unused for years.
Skip small gas redemptions
At Esso, 4,000 points takes 10¢/L off up to 40 litres. If you only buy 20 litres, you get half the value. Redeem on a full tank or not at all.
PC Optimum tips at a glance
- Load personalized offers in the app every week, before you shop.
- Combine loaded offers with sale prices and price matching at No Frills.
- Save points for a Shoppers bonus redemption event if you can wait.
- Redeem gas points only on a full tank.
- Check your receipt: offers and points should show on it.
